A seventeen year old (female) incoming college freshman whose ultimate dream is to become a videogame journalist. I have a strong affinity to videogames, especially ones with strong storylines and characters that just demand emotional investment. Also, games that have substantial longevity and immense replay value, as well as unique mechanics. I play two musical instruments - guitar and piano, with I being fairly adept in playing the former and not so much in the latter. If one is to consider voice, then I suppose that’s three instruments. I am (or is that was?) in a band called Attack the Airwaves - born out of the teenage desire to become big, formed with the best people I’ve ever met in high school. I suppose it’s only fair to say that high school might be the ultimate destination of the band, but it will always be a part of me. Of late, my plans regarding music include writing songs and, hopefully, record a good enough demo and take a shot at a prospective music career. I want to form a piano-rock band (like SoCo, Making April, The Morning Of, etc.) in college, with the Morning of/We Are the In Crowd-style tradeoff vocals.
I write stories and poems, essays and, on occasion, songs. I have the inclination to be flowery with my prose but I’m often attacked by writer’s block when it comes to writing about my feelings and stuff - because I believe one cannot convey properly one’s feelings with just words. Nevertheless, writing is a weapon - one which I seek to wield responsibly.
A list, of things that I’m immensely interested in:
- The highly immersive Elder Scrolls games. Waltzing into Tamriel was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my entire life.
- Victorian. I’ve read a handful of books from the era - including Stoker’s immortal masterpiece - and I’ve just this weird fascination for very fancy clothing and unparalleled eloquence.
- Persona 3. I’ve before mentioned that I love games that demand emotional investment, and this is easily one of the best games that offer that. It also delivers on the story, and while the central plot is etched with dark fantasy, it’s very realistic in how it portrays its teenage characters.
- A number of bands, including (but not limited to): Paradise Fears, Chase This City, The Morning Of, Yellowcard, We Are the In Crowd, All Time Low, the now-defunct groups Sing It Loud and Making April, Pierce the Veil, Sleeping With Sirens, Alesana. I draw musical inspiration from these groups (and some more I have failed to mention, I suppose), and while not all of their jams are lyrical gems, when they actually make hits, they nail it. Most notable of these for me are Yellowcard, The Morning Of, Paradise Fears, WATIC, and Making April.
- Neil Gaiman. Basically, he exudes awesome. I’ve only ever read his books (as graphic novels, in general, are a little too pricey), but they’re every bit amazing and tantalizing.
- Kuroshitsuji. Admittedly, I’ve only gotten in to the show several months before, not being an anime lover, but it does have the perfect blend of Victorian, Faustian contracts and comedy to bolster the impressive storyline (I dig Faustian contracts, okay).
- Adventure Time. Witty and comedic, and I would easily understand if one tags it as ‘stupid’, but it is a pretty fun show.
- The Monstrumology series by Rick Yancey. While set in the United States - for the most part - the time period is absorbing, being in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s (I’m too lazy to search it, okay), and behind all the blood and violence, the young narrator-slash-monstrumology assistant Will Henry is a charming enough character who doesn’t just hunt purportedly fictional monsters come to life (with his boss, the rather crazy Pellinore Warthrop), but deals with his own personal demons, too.
- The zombie apocalypse. I’ve racked up enough videogame-aided experience over the years to know what I need to do if ever it breaks out (and at the rate technology’s going right now, a virus that reduces a person to nothing but a decaying, feral beast might just come out), and I basically can’t wait for that moment just so I could test out my theories.
Also, I’m not a very social person, and my best friend on summer nights (and especially when I’m trying to write) is always coffee.
So yeah, basically I’m a book nerd/girl gamer/music person who’s addicted to that magical elixir called coffee :) Nice to meet you!
